The efficacy of insecticides and application methods against Contarinia nasmrtii under laboratory and field conditions

Swede midge(Contarinia nasturtii Keiffer)is a serious gall-forming insect pest of cruciferous plants in Europe and southwestern Asia. In North America,it was frst identified in Ontario,Canada,in 2000,and in Niagara County,New York,USA,in 2004. The insect is now rapidly spreading in both Canada and the US. To date. Infestations of C. nasturtii have been found in 40 counties in Canada and 11 counties in the US.Under laboratory conditions,the efficacy of 20 insecticides belonging to 12 different classes was evaluated using foliar spray,soil drench or seed treatments.Results showed that λ-cyhalothrin,acephate,acetamiprid,chlorpyrifos and methomyl were effective foliar spray insecticides against C.nasturtii larvae. These insecticides,except for acetamiprid,were also effective on adults.Acetamiprid,imidacloprid,and thiamethoxam were very effective when applied by soil drench and provided 100%control of swede midge larvae for 7 weeks.Clothianidin and thiamethoxam provided 100%control when used as seed treatments.Under field conditions in Canada in 2005,performance of these products was poor compared to the laboratory trials. Tests were conducted to determine whether this was due to insecticide tolerance,but this hypothesis was rejected. Instead.we hypothesize that the failure was due to continuous and hiigh populations of C.nasturtii.Additional field and laboratory tests are currently underway to evaluate insecticides under lower population pressure and to test the potential of cultural controls and host plant resistance as components of an overall IPM program.
