摘要

The objective of this thesis is to improve a micromechanics-based constitutive model (DCA), which was recently developed for the mechanical response of brittle materials (e.g., ceramics), by incorporating the plastic deformation of the materials. The new model (Plastic-DCA) was formulated using a general, three-dimensional continuum mechanics framework. It now accounts for not only the elastic and the crack strains, but also for the plastic deformation in the materials.;A set of computer routines has been developed to numerically implement the Plastic-DCA model. As an example, it was applied to predict the response of silicon carbide (SiC) subjected to different loading paths. The new results are compared with those predicted by the DCA model. The new model can now be applied to model the damage and failure of quasi-brittle materials which also display plastic deformation in addition to brittle damage.
