WHAT INFLUENCES OUR COMPREHENSION OF ENGLISH IDIOMS? — A STUDY MEASURING THE IMPACT OF CROSS-CULTURAL DIFFERENCES AND THE ROLE OF NATIVE LANGUAGE
The study reported in this article investigated the impact ofcross-cultural differences and the role of native language ( NL )in the comprehension of target language idioms. Comprehensionof 10 unlearnt idioms was tested by asking the subjects to writedown the meanings of the selected idioms without any contextualclues in 15 minutes. Results indicated that idioms sharing thesame metaphoric themes in NL and target language (TL)cultures were more easily understood than those sharing differentmetaphoric themes. The result also strengthens the point that acognitive semantic view can facilitate the learning of idioms fornon-native speakers.
