In John Potvin's most recent study Bachelors of a Different Sort: Queer Aesthetics, Material Culture and the Modern Interior in Britain, the spaces of the queer domestic interiors and the men who create and inhabit them are undoubtedly haunted. Whichever way the author, his subject(s) and his reader(s) turn, a spectral figure at once extravagant, comic and tragic, lurks in the corners and, from time to time, catches the eye. The spectre is, of course, Oscar Wilde, who in both life and death dominated (and to some extent still dominates) popular notions about what it meant to be an Aesthete and/or a Queer man in the late nineteenth century and well into the twentieth. In the lives and interiors explored in this book Wilde, at first, moves through the spaces and lives as a friend or acquaintance of men such as Ronald Gower, Charles Shannon, and Charles Ricketts; then, after the 1895 trial and imprisonment, a figure to be shunned for fear of contamination by association and, finally after his death, a ghost that "embodies' the type of exuberant effeminate queerness that must be avoided in order to escape the very real threat of both persecution and prosecution.
