摘要

It took most of four decades following the nationalisation of the'big four'private railway companies to work out how to organise, equip, fund and run a modern integrated state railway. And, along the way there were various alarums and excursions, such as the modernisation plan, the Beeching report, the sacking of a chairman by a Transport Minister, the crumbling edge of quality and the Serpell report. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the start of privatisation. And we must admit that in the first two decades of the privatised railway these columns have seen more drama than the in the whole of British Rail's existence.
