摘要

The concept of risk assessment is introduced and the difficulties inherent in such activity are described, especially those involved in the quantitative assessment of the health risk suffered by welders, the pertinent literature being cited. The specific possibility of an excess risk for lung cancer for welders is examined in the light of existing epidemiological studies, a number of which are found to be positive. The possible consequences of the presence of the putative carcinogens Ni and Cr(VI) in fumes from stainless steel welding processes, and the implications of positive results of short term in vitro screening tests on this class of fumes are discussed.
