The method involves capturing and utilizing a road inclination to assist a driver of a motor vehicle in a hill hold mode when accelerating or driving on the mountain. A coupling torque (9) is specified with a constant value at a slope, where the size of the constant value depends on the road inclination. The clutch torque is maintained at the constant value for a limited period of time after releasing the foot brake.
