摘要

The ramifications of designing for, against, or with nature in the regenerative city are the basis for this project, with intentions of creating a new relationship between the built and the natural. It is designed to provoke an appreciation for landscapes as shifting, living, progressing phenomena presented in a catalytic design that could introduce ecology and environmental awareness as new values of the urban condition.; The site, the Port Industrial Area of Toronto's East Bayfront, was chosen because it appealed to the study as an evocative example of a dynamic landscape. A desolate industrial wasteland situated adjacent to the conversely active center of downtown Toronto, the site has potential for new initiatives but rendered with a history of missed opportunity. Once a lush landscape of natural habitats and recreational activity, it has fallen short to visions of industrial grandeur, global image, and changing and inconsistent attitudes towards land use.; Areas of study include ecology and sustainability—of form, city and environment. The greatest challenge of the project is in fact the condition of the chosen site, the required remediation to develop it and the time and process involved in revitalization of the area. It is a position of manufacturing the site and rethinking the urban landscape.; The proposed program, a Center for Green Enterprise and Industry, was first introduced in an environmental assessment of the area by the city of Toronto. It has been adopted for thesis studies as a response to the present environmental awareness and remediation required for the site. However, building intervention is to anticipate a change in occupation and the development of a more mixed-used neighborhood. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
